About the department

The Building/Inspections Department includes inspections, planning and zoning. The department issues permits, determines proper land use, and inspects new construction, renovations or work that requires an inspection. This includes residential, commercial, and business.

Licenses

A license is required for any business, trade, vocation, occupation, or profession conducted in the City of Moody. Please call the Revenue Department at (205) 640-0304 for information concerning requirement and fees.

Permits

Permits must be obtained for the following:
construction, renovation, additions, alterations, or repairs to residential, business, or commercial structures.

  • Fences (must have drawings)
  • Pools (must have drawings)
  • Signs
  • Accessory Structures
  • Roofing
  • Electrical, Plumbing, Gas and Mechanical work must hold proper certificates
  • Heating and Air
  • Permits for buildings should include two or more complete sets of plans, health department approval or sewer impact receipt and plot plan.

Mobile Homes are allowed in the City of Moody in AG-1 (Agricultural Zoning). Must have at least one acre of land and signatures of adjoining property owners. Must also have a Mobile Home permit and a certified Master Electrician to wire the power.

All plans, tier II reports, 3rd party inspection and testing forms, permit applications and other documentation should be sent to fireplans@moodyalabama.gov.

Fire Inspections

  • Periodic Fire and Life Safety Inspections on all commercial occupancies in the city.
  • Permitting for life safety systems as needed in all commercial occupancies.
  • Fire and Life Safety Inspections on all new businesses as part of the certificate of occupancy.
  • Review of new construction plans and existing renovations of commercial buildings 
  • Approval of life safety plans for occupancies that are required to have these.
  • Fire and life safety code enforcement concerning outdoor burning, fire watch, hot works programs and other life safety initiatives as prescribed by the IFC 2021 edition.
  • Maintaining of fire department records 
  • Post fire investigations for cause determination.
  • Coordination of community risk reduction including fire prevention education, life safety education and public relations events.
  • Retention and review of records for Hazardous Substance Tier II Program.
